Back to School

I would like to think of myself as being super studious right now. I am taking two classes a week for the rest of the month. (Chad's not sure what to think about it. I think his response was, "Let's not keep trying to see how many classes we can take, okay?") Okay. This is good for now!

A couple of months ago was at my cousin's home in Alpine for a baby shower and that is where I became motivated (and extremely envious) of her home. Besides the fact her home is gorgeous, it was the pictures on the walls which had me envious. Every photograph in her home was taken by either she or her husband..it was all pictures of their family and places they had been, or it was a beautiful nature scene. I loved it! I decided then and there I was going to learn to be a photographer. (Okay, well not really professional photographer, but enough that I could take great pictures of the people and places I love most. I love the idea of covering my walls with my beautiful children!) So, I signed up for a photography class. It's only through the community and quite honestly the first class was not too thrilling--but I feel like I am learning a bit more about picture-taking.

Oh, and can I mention this is also a plug for Chad to make note that I really need that Nikon camera pictured up above. I think that just might be the ticket to me being a better photographer!

The second class I am taking is a Love and Logic course taught by a friend of mine from Heber. (Can I just say she is a great teacher!) I found out through her blog that she teaches these courses, and that she would be teaching one in Herriman. I recruited my friend Rachel to join me for the course (beings that she is from Heber too and knows Katie, the instructor) and also so we could both discover together how wrong we are in our parenting methods!

After our first class on Thursday evening I came home ready to try out my new parenting skills. Carsen was still awake and bouncing off the walls. I informed Chad that he was going about the process wrong of trying to get Carsen to settle down and he said, "How do you do it?" (I had forgotten). I told him to continue on with the 'old way' for tonight and I would start fresh in the morning!

One of the things you are supposed to do is go 'brain dead' when your child starts whining about something. Perfect, happens all the time at my house! So, the next morning Carsen was whining about wanting something and I did the 'ole brain dead routine. (Instead of negotiating and reasoning with your child, you are supposed to tell them ONE time why they can't have or do something and then after that you just keep saying, 'I know" when they keep asking and trying to reason.) After I said "I know" about five times to Carsen's reasoning, he looked at me and said, "Mom, stop saying I know." I think Carsen might have figured out my 'brain dead' routine.

Actually, it has been a good couple of days since the class. (Not that it was ever really bad). But, I haven't raised my voice once! (For those of you who never raise your voice at your kids...good for you!) For those of you who do...this class is awesome!

So where do I sign up for my family photo session??

I really should do the Love and Logic class. My kids would probably appreciate it, if it makes me stop raising my voice...LOL!!!
You are a great mom Keysh!

Thanks for the L and L tip! Both classes sound like they would be a lot of fun. You deserve the break right? I could use both classes! We have a canon rebel and I love it!! I can't believe how much better quality of pictures it takes than a normal digital (although I've heard if you know how to use your settings on your normal digital they work really well too). I'll tell Chad next time I see him that you need it!

I need a parenting class like that! You'll have to keep posting all of the things you are learning. I too would love a nice camera to take pictures. Good luck with your new endeavers! Kathryn and I talked about you this weekend... just saying how dang cute you are!

Okay so I have this slight obsession of looking at photography blogs, and being inspired by all the beautiful pictures of children and families. I am headed down the same road to take beautiful pictures of my kids and display them all over my home. Still trying to figure out what camera I should start off with.....because it makes ALL the difference! Wish we could take the class together!!!

Also, I've seen Katie's L&L site, and wished she would come to Colorado! I want to take that class with Steffon! I think we could both use some tips!

Good for you Keysh!

I really like the "Love and Logic" method....but, I seriously think you don't need to take those classes. You are so awesome with your kids. Sheesh, just look at Carsen...wasn't he talking before he was 1???

I'm pretty positive Chad will get you that camera...what Keysha wants, Keysha should always get...RIGHT??? (note: this is my new phrase in our household:)

You are adorable & and inspiring.
Keep up the "brain dead." It's ok if he says that to you. You can just respond with "I love you too much to argue."
Keep it up girl. I can tell you are one amazing Mama!

Keysha - you are so studious! I'm glad that you have the opportunity to take the photography class and that we are taking L & L together (thanks for your support). I think it's funny that Carsen picked up on the changes so quickly, he is one smart kid!

You're always a modivation to me Keysh. Thanks. I've always wanted to get into photography- maybe someday. And that Love n' Logic class sounds wonderful as well. Let me know how that goes and I'd love any great advise along the way.

I love this post! I love Love and Logic. I read it for the first time when Bella was just a baby and I love the whole premise. I have both books if you haven't already bought them. My favorite part is that they get a choice in everything so they "think" they are in control.

I am jealous with you. I want to learn some photography things and want a new camera. It would be awesome.

And I am going to have to take some of your Love and Logic advice, so fill me in on what you learn. I could really use some good parenting skills. And I am not sure you need them, you are already a great mommy.

Thanks for the tips and good job on your classes. That is really a lot of fun. We had a professional photographer come to our ward and present a lesson on photography. It was really interesting and I think a class would be awesome. Let me know when you get really good and we will be down for family pictures!!!

Look at you, always learning something new!! That's awesome that you found a photography class... you'll have to let me know how you like it. I took one here through the Boise State continued learning and enjoyed it (some things more than others!)

Way to go Keysha - keeping yourself educated :)

I want to do that parenting class with Katie. I've talked to her before about it but just never pursued it. We took one in January at the Legacy Center in Lehi, but I'm well overdue for a refresher.

Keep posting parenting tips on your blog...I've forgotten almost everything and would love some new tips :)

Keysh, I just got the Nikon D60 for my birthday! So far I really love it, but I have no idea how to use it. So maybe I should join your photography class. I tried to sign up for one this summer but it conflicted with my having a baby schedule so I put it off. Let me know how it goes. In the meantime, come teach me how to use my camera!

Keysha, if only you knew how awesome the camera you already have is. But that Nikon is even more awesome. Tell Chad to get two of those! (for the lucky sister-in-law!)
